Lunarpages has been in the business since 1998 and has had over 150,000 clients and counting. In the realm of web hosting, 150,000 clients is a pretty small number, which is quite telling of the service that this company provides. Make no mistake, Lunarpages is not a terrible VPS provider. In fact, there is definitely a lot to like here, such as the impressive scalability of their plans, the varied operating system choices, and the faster-than-average speed. Unfortunately, blemishes like the high cost, below-average uptime, or the relatively small maximum storage capacity (compared to others), are major disadvantages. So is Lunarpages still worth your hard-earned cash despite these shortcomings? Read on to find out!

Impressive Scalability: Lunarpages’ VPS cloud hosting solution is fully scalable, which allows you to customize your VPS experience to fit your company’s needs. You can, for instance, choose how many cores, how much RAM, and how much storage you need from the various selections they provide.
Speed: For the most part, Lunarpages’ speed performs admirably well. With a recorded speed of around 590ms, they are among the faster web hosts around.
Choice of Operating System: You can freely choose which operating system your VPS server will run on, whether Linux, Windows, or even Ubuntu. Other companies only provide either Linux or Windows, so it’s great that you get to choose between the two, plus Ubuntu.

Cons

Maximum Storage: The storage capacity that Lunarpages offers maxes out at 100GB. There are other companies out there that can offer more storage if you need anything larger than what this one provides.
Price: While the flexibility of Lunarpages’ VPS offerings is great, the prices aren’t very affordable. If you are on a budget, this isn’t the way to go.
Uptime: At 99.89%, Lunarpages’ uptime is just a smidge below the industry average. While the numbers aren’t terrible (far from it), it is telling of how inconsistent their uptime is.
Add-ons: Lunarpages imposes fees on add-ons that cost no extra charge elsewhere. More than that, they cost a pretty penny, too, like cPanel or Softaculous, for instance.

As previously mentioned, Lunarpages’ VPS plans are fully scalable, which gives you a great degree of flexibility. However, with a standard fee of $44.95 a month, Lunarpages is not for those seeking an affordable way to get your website online, making it more for medium to large businesses. The scalability may also work to your disadvantage if you are not careful of what you add on to your subscription because you run the risk of adding more than what you need or can afford. Still, this is Lunarpages’ strongest suit as it allows you to fine tune your VPS configuration to the exact (or at least, approximate) specifications that you need.

You can, for starters, choose which operating system you prefer. They offer Linux and Windows, and even throw in Ubuntu for good measure. You can also choose between two different Managed Hosting services (Lite or Intense), three different control panels (Website panel, LunarPanel, and cPanel), and you can even choose CPU cores, RAM, and storage.

Pricing

The base configuration that Lunarpages offers comes with 2GB RAM, 50GB SSD storage, 1TB bandwidth, 1 IP address, a free domain name, and is run on multiple servers for failover. Now, while this is already a good package for small to medium business, larger companies might need more storage or more bandwidth to accommodate more traffic.

If the base features are not enough for you, then you can customize your configuration how you see fit. Starting from the base 2GB RAM, you can upgrade it all the way up to 12GB at increments of 1GB. This will cost you $0.60/GB/day. Meanwhile, you can also increase the CPU cores up to 8, which will set you back $0.30/core/day.

Storage, meanwhile, can also be upgraded if your needs demand it. Storage only goes up to 100GB at $0.30/day, which is a bit disappointing, considering other companies can offer more for less. Even more disappointing is the high cost of other services and/or add-ons. For example, things like Softaculous and cPanel, which are usually offered at no extra cost by other companies, are pretty hefty, price-wise. So, again, if you are on a budget, Lunarpages is definitely not advisable.

For the most part, Lunarpages’ customer support is pretty decent. The FAQ’s could use more content, and their Wiki resources could use some sprucing up to make browsing easier, but they both get the job done. There is also a community forum on tap if you want to browse more resources or ask other users for assistance. Meanwhile, the company can be contacted by phone and ticket submission. They offer a live chat option, but it is only reserved for sales, and not support, concerns.

Lunarpages is one of the few VPS services around that allows you to customize the VPS configuration to fit your needs. From the OS, to storage, to bandwidth, to RAM, and beyond, the company gives you an almost granular control over the specifications of your plan. More than that, Lunarpages also manages to provide better-than-average page load speeds. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of their uptime. While it’s not terrible, their recorded uptime falls below the industry average, and is pretty inconsistent at times. Meanwhile, the maximum storage that they offer is equally disappointing – which is baffling, since they maximum RAM they provide, at 12GB, is pretty large. Finally, the price is probably their biggest shortcoming. While the flexibility of their VPS offerings allows you to have some control over how much you end up paying for, there is no denying that, even with their most basic configuration, the prices are still quite expensive. So if you are not willing to pay more than $30 per month for VPS hosting, then Lunarpages should definitely get a solid pass. There are, after all, better options out there.
