Signing up and Starting the Search

As far as starting out goes, MyTrees makes it easier for you than most of its competitors. All you need to do is provide the usual details–your name, location, email and password–and you’re all set. Because the service provides a free basic account, you don’t need to enter your billing information or choose a subscription plan before you gain access to the site and its contents and features. In fact, if you’re just planning to browse through or search for something in the MyTrees archive, you don’t even need to sign up.

Full Access for Free

You can also get a free 31-day full access trial if you create or upload a family tree that has at least 15 families and 60 separate names. It’s worth trying, if only to sample the subscriber-only features, such as: the option to view extracted records and book search results, access to notes and submitter information for all family trees in the MyTrees archive, and what MyTrees calls “Every Family Search”. The latter gives you an easy way to go through the site’s full archive for information that may be related to each and every relative named in your family tree, all at once.

Instructions Included, but Not Extra Access

When it comes to making the most out of the service’s small archive, you’ll have a lot of assistance to back up your own research habits. MyTrees has solid FAQ sections for all the different ways you can search for genealogy information on the site, although the exhaustive nature of the instructions–while obviously intended to help–may be too much to take in. There’s a lot of text to go through, so to keep reading fatigue down, it may just be easier and more efficient for some users to check out a specific FAQ only when you absolutely need to confirm how to do something. Also, it is worth noting that MyTrees has partnerships which allow it to return more search results from separate databases and services, but do not allow you full access to their records; you may sometimes have to pay the separate service in question for that privilege.

Building Family Trees with MyTrees

MyTrees offers a family tree builder that is simple to use and is loaded with features–except for the truly essential ones that you may have come to expect and accept as basic tools, especially if you’re not new to genealogy research. There is no automatic record matching, and subsequently no hint notifications for you to evaluate and potentially add historical records as supporting documents to your family tree. There is also no way to automatically add more than six generations of someone else’s submitted family tree to your own. Mobile app support is standard for most services that boast of a comprehensive family tree builder; MyTrees is lacking that, too.

Builder Features

What MyTree does have, though, is still worth checking out. Other services may offer an easier and more painless way to do it, but within MyTrees’ family tree builder, you can store and sort photos into multiple albums–and then attach any number of these albums to individuals in your family tree. You can even embed YouTube videos in these albums, for a truly multimedia experience. While you can’t link historical records from the site archive directly to your family tree, you can add two kinds of notes: source notes that help you document additions and progress you’ve made through research, and history information notes that allow you to add information you already know.

Work Offline

If you want to keep your research and your family tree details completely offline, MyTrees can help you with that–even though it’s really not in its best interests to do so. They offer a free program called Legacy 8.0 Family Tree that you can download directly from the site. Developed specifically for MyTrees, it can connect directly to MyTrees’ archive and you can do your searches from within the program; but you can also just manage and maintain your family tree without ever connecting the program to the Internet. With Legacy 8.0 Family Tree, you can organize, share and even print out your family history.

Connecting and Collaborating

This is an area where MyTrees has a significant lack of options and features. Almost everything that’s meant to improve on the collaborative aspect of the service is built into to its family tree builder and is meant to encourage family connections. You can submit and share your family tree, along with the pictures and scanned images attached to it, and also search for and add parts of submitted family trees to your own. And as access to submitter information is granted to subscribers, this is also a way to identify and interact with distant relatives who may also be using the service and creating their own family trees. When you do find a family tree that you can glean details from to add to your own, chances are that tree’s submitter is related to you in some way.

Through a feature called Family Access, you can create a family password that you can use to provide and limit access to your account updates; new family tree data, latest photos added, and even an online family newsletter that you can create and host on MyTrees. Just share the password with anyone that you want.

Paying for Premium Service

Unlike many of its competitors, MyTrees offers free options that make it possible for you to search for and get information relevant to your research without even signing up for its service. If you do sign up and choose to go with a free account, you will be able to create your family tree, add photos and scanned images to it, create a family newsletter and even use Family Access. Most notable about the free account is the option to use Notify Me, which is basically a way for you to set up alerts for searches bound by a given ancestor’s name and a date range.

MyTrees Review 2020 – Conclusion

Through its faults and limitations, the noble intentions of MyTrees shine through. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this service offers one of the best free basic accounts available in the online genealogy research market. Yes, it does lack many features that most similar services offer–sometimes even for free–but as a whole, what you get in return for little to nothing given by MyTrees is amazing. If you’re new to genealogy research, don’t mind reading long tutorials and FAQs, and really don’t want to pay a monthly fee, MyTrees is a good place to start. That being said, its small archive of records really doesn’t do it any favors, and you may find yourself fully maximizing the service’s potential in just a few short weeks or months–paid subscription or not.
