Freshbooks started as an accident, like how some great inventions came to be. Mike McDerment, now CEO and co-founder of the company, was running a four person design agency which used Microsoft Word for their invoice template, when one day, he accidentally saved over an old invoice. This little error led Mike to code a better solution to creating invoices, and thus, the mighty Freshbooks was born (and actually grew up for quite some time in its parent's basement).

Pricing and Features

Aside from additional team and project options, the main criteria for the price points of Freshbooks is the number of clients that you are able to send invoices to- all the other features are the same across the board. That includes unlimited invoice creation, online payment options, late payment reminders, notification if your invoice has been seen (an extremely useful feature since clients cannot say they have not received your invoice), automatic expense imports and tracking, recording of billable hours, setting different rates for different projects, and customization options, like branding your invoices with your own logo and hiding their branding in emails to clients.

Ease of Use

Freshbooks has a very modern and eye-pleasing design with menus and quick links arranged neatly at the top and side of the page. In creating an invoice, if you have not filled-in all the necessary information in your account to create an invoice, small window pop-ups will appear on their invoice creation page to gather these details. Moreover, all of the necessary information needed in the form will be marked with an asterisk so you wouldn’t have to go back and forth submitting and re-editing. Plus, with just one click, you can save as PDF or send the completed invoice via email, or add a little extra ($2.29) and they will print and snail mail the invoice for you. All you have to do is put in the details, click on the necessary buttons and fields, and your invoices are on their way.

Customer Support

Aside from Freshbooks’ handy dandy support search toolbar and highly detailed support page which includes helpful tutorial videos on the various features of the software, they can also be contacted via snail mail, email, and phone (both toll free and worldwide hotlines) for any issues, concerns, or clarifications. Their office hours are from Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 8 PM EST. A useful feature right below their office hours is a current time indicator for Toronto, where their office is located, so you would know if they are available no matter what timezone you are in.
